TL/DR: This release adds a warning when ChatKeeper detects signs of an incomplete ChatGPT export, with an option to process the export anyway.

I’ve been having an issue with my ChatGPT exports for several months, and I’m not the only one.

My export files suddenly became much smaller (as in, hundreds of MB smaller). The reason is that they are missing a lot of information they used to contain, including things like generated images and even entire conversation turns.

Searching online has shown that others are experiencing it too. And, for some reason, it may not affect everybody. But in my case at least, it seems to be consistent: once my exports started dropping information, they continued to do so.

I’ve tried contacting OpenAI support multiple times about this. A few conversations and support tickets have started out encouragingly, but so far none have led anywhere. I’m still pursuing it; if you know someone at OpenAI who might be able to help me dig into this or put me in contact with someone who can, please point them my way!

In the meantime, this release can now detect signs of this issue and warn you before processing your export.

Note that this release cannot recover content missing from the export. I recommend you keep your older exports around in case you need them later.

I’m very interested to hear what ChatKeeper reports to you. Whether you get the warning or not, please let me know with a quick message. As you might know, I don’t build any telemetry into my software. That’s really important to me for your privacy, but it also means I need to ask for help in situations like this.

I’m also looking into ways for ChatKeeper to safely preserve information from earlier exports when newer exports are missing it. That will require some fairly significant changes behind the scenes, but they should also make ChatKeeper’s internal handling of exports more robust in general.

Fixed and added in this release

Added detection of signs of incomplete ChatGPT exports, with a warning in both the GUI and CLI.
Added a CLI option, --allow-incomplete, to explicitly bypass the warning and continue when running chatkeeper keep.

Still in progress

Continuing to pursue the missing-data issue with OpenAI.
Developing a safe way to preserve previously exported information when later exports are incomplete.
